GI Joe has continued to be popular even though he was first created in 1942. The initial debut for GI Joe was in a military magazine called YANK. He went on to become a household name in 1945, when a movie was created about the character GI Joe. The term GI stands for Government Issue, US soldiers were often called this prior to the toys development. The action figure has grown in popularity with many small children enjoying the huge brand it has now become. GI Joe figures have contributed too many American children deciding they wanted to serve their country.
The GI Joe trademark covers two different toy lines, the original line which was created in 1942, and the newer version which was released in 1982. Although the original 12″ action figure became Action Man when he entered the UK, in the US GI Joe remained true to his heritage. The newer version of GI Joe was centered on a whole storyline. This allowed other figures, vehicles and play sets to be developed. The overall story of GI Joe consisted of his ongoing battles to fight and defeat the evil Cobra Command.
The action figures that were produced covered all four areas of the armed forces. There were an Action Soldier, Sailor, Pilot and Marine. By the middle of the 1960′s GI Joe was a household name and brand. American boys of all ages loved, and respected the image that GI Joe represented. The marketing wisdom knew that boys would never play with dolls. The term action figure was thought to represent the posable toy far better. There was a female GI Joe released in 1967, but she proved not to be popular, and no other figure like her was produced.

The original idea behind the 1985 cartoon was for GI Joe to show the battle between good and evil. Although the cartoon did have moderate violence, the producers had to find a way to allow for the lack of bullets. The release of GI Joe the movie became the demise of the cartoon series. However, in 1989 it was brought back by the animated company DIC. They went on to do a further two series, eventually ending the GI Joe cartoon series in 1991.
