The Razor Pocket Mod Betty scooter is another perfect example. First off, it is made in the style of the famous Vespa Italian scooter, and is a gorgeous lavender and white, so it is perfect for girls of all ages. Is your teenager going off to college? Get her a Betty scooter. She will be able to ride for 30 minutes without a new charge, and it has a top speed of 15 miles per hour. No, she will not be riding it in the Gran Turino motorway any time soon. But it will get her to and from classes without worrying about finding a parking place.

Oh, you want to spend a little more than four hundred dollars? Then look no further than the X-Treme Lithium powered electric bicycle (they call it a bicycle because it has auxiliary pedals should you run out of charge on the way home) The X-Treme costs more, at around $1500 it is not nearly as cheep as the Betty. But the battery life is considerably longer (7 years compared to 2 for the Razor) The X-Treme registers 20 mph, and will go for 35 miles without a charge.

Take your time searching for an electric scooter. Check one out in person if you can. Sit on it, and get the feel for the way your seat fits the saddle. Put the kick frame down and pull your feet up, and see how it feels. Practice using hand brakes and the throttle (on the right handlebar) Check out the lights and the horn buttons. Now that you know how things work, you are maybe ready to take a ride.

A word about safety: never fear. You will lay this scooter down at least once. It is not a sign of inexperience. It is not a lack of skill. It is just one of those things. There is not a bike, or a biker alive who has not gotten been up close and personal with the ground. So make sure you wear a good, DOT approved helmet. Remember, they are called Brain Buckets for a reason. When you are learning, find someplace where you can ride without worrying about cars and pedestrians. Stay away from gravel and loose dirt until you get the hang of it.

After you take your first trip to the store or to class on your silent, seriously cool electric scooter, you will be hooked. You will crave the fun of the wind in your face, being out in the fresh air, and yes, even learning how different bugs taste (butterflies do not taste like butter).

Have fun. Ride long. Ride safe.
