The Angry Birds Knock on Wood game is an exciting, adventurous goal oriented game that offers a tactile playing field for two to four players. You play the game just the same as on the phone as you launch the Angry Birds toward the egg-stealing pigs’ wooden castles to destroy them (which you create yourself) and advance to the next level. To be honest at first I was a little unimpressed by the game thinking it would be us just throwing birds at wood sculptures, but it was much more than I had anticipated and all of us had a great time! If you have younger kids you can help them build the castle or just create a fun building structure as that is half the fun. We had a little trouble re-creating some of the actual castles so we improvised. Overall, a fun game for a variety of ages and a decent price for a game that offers skills, fine motor skills, and patience, and overall a much better way to spend an afternoon than in front of your iphone!

Planning For Your Sandbox

Finding the perfect spot is the first step in planning your sandbox. The location might be determined by where you have space available and the size in which you choose to build the box. The instructions included suggest an eight-foot by eight-foot frame which takes up 64 sq. ft but you can easily cut the project in half by re-sizing and make a four-foot by four-foot box as well.

You also want to make sure that your sandbox is an area the kids can get to easy, can take a cover off easily, and hopefully is not in direct sunlight. If it is, then you may want to consider investing in an umbrella for some cover as well. if you place the sand box under a shady tree then you just need to make sure you cover the box so no leaves get inside. Also, for safety’s sake, locate the sandbox where you can keep an eye on the youngsters while they’re playing.

When planning the size of the sandbox, make sure you take into consideration enough room for your growing kids and their friends, along with some sand toys. Keep in mind that you will have to put a lot of sand within and maintain it overtime. The bracing and corner assembly construction will be the same regardless of the length and width. Some people enjoy having a sandbox that is further down into the ground so it does not stick up as high, while others might like to make the sandbox walls higher than normal so flying sand does not get out onto the grass or area. It is mostly up to preference and available room but planning properly will save you any headaches in the long run.

Preparing the Site For the Sandbox

When you’ve decided on site and size, measure, mark and prepare the area.

1. Use twine and stakes to make straight lines.

2. Cut out the shape with a shovel.

3. Remove sod (use it to cover bare spots in your yard if you have any).

4. Dig out the soil. You’ll want the bottom edge of the sandbox slightly below the surface to help keep the walls in place.

5. Level the cleared area if necessary.

6. Put down a layer of landscape fabric (not plastic) to allow drainage and prevent weeds and grass from popping up through the sand.

Cutting and Assembling of the Sandbox

To minimize cuts, you can build the sandbox from 8′ lumber. Cedar is waterproof, attractive and approved for ground contact. To get the depth we need (12″), the 6″ wide boards require joining.

1. Square and cut four of the 1×6 boards to 8′ lengths.

2. Use construction adhesive to edge glue and clamp two sets of 8′ boards. Allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The glued 8′ boards are sides A and C of the sandbo

3. Cut eight 10″ pieces from one of the 1×3 boards. These are the inside supports.

4. Use 1 1/4″ galvanized screws to secure one inside support at each end of each glued 8′ board. The 10″ 1×3′s should be on the inside face, flush with the ends of the 8′ boards as shown in the picture.

5. Square and cut four of the 1×6 boards to 7′ 9″lengths.

6. Use construction adhesive to edge glue and clamp two sets of 7′ 9″ boards. Allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The glued 7′ 9″ boards are sides B and D of the sandbox.

7. Secure one inside support at each end of each glued 7′ 9″ board (see Step 4).

8. Cut the remaining 1×3 boards into 20″ lengths. You should have twelve 20″ 1×3′s.

9. Cut one end of each 20″ 1×3 to a point (see diagram). The 20″ 1×3′s will serve as stakes for the sides of the sandbox.

10. Finish all of the pieces.

Final Assembly of the Sandbox

When you’re putting together your box, remember that tight construction prevents sand from leaking out so make sure the sandbox is square.

1. Stand one of the 8′ side-pieces on edge and butt the end of one of the 7′ 9″ pieces to the inside support on the 8′ piece. Drive 3″ galvanized deck screws through the 8′ piece into the 7′ 9″ piece. Do the same on opposite end of the 8″ piece. Remember to keep the inside supports facing the inside of the sandbox.

2. Attach the second 8′ piece to the 7′ 9″ piece the same way as the first and square the sandbox. Secure the two halves together to complete the box.

3. Drive three stakes into the ground along the outside of each side of the sandbox. Position the first stake centered on the side-piece Position the other two stakes two feet to the left and right of the first. Drive each stake so its top is flush with the top edge of the side-piece

4. Drive 1 1/4″ galvanized screws through the stakes into the side-pieces The stakes help reinforce the sides of the sandbox and keep it square.

5. Sand lightly if needed to prevent splinters.
